The true meaning of success is not, cannot, be the same for everyone. Why? We are each a unique individual.

We each have our own unique plan for our lives. There is no other person that is the same as us. Therefore our plans for ourselves will be different from any other person. Even if our plans are similar, our choices in carrying them out are not the same.

It is our choices

It is our choices that truly define who and what we are in life. The choices you make have a great impact on how you live. Most importantly, however, is that the choices you make greatly impact the direction of your life.

We all want a future that is meaningful – satisfying – fulfilling. However, building that future requires knowing yourself – inside and out. Do you know who you are?

Check in with yourself from time to time. Spending quiet time – with just yourself – is the time to focus on you. The real you.

Without any distraction or filtering, spend time exploring, and honestly evaluate yourself. It is through your honesty that you will determine your real character.

Your character takes time to develop, with your experiences being the root of its development. However, it is our choices, whether to learn and take action, or not, that add to or subtract from our character.

Making the best choices is ongoing in order to keep and strengthen our character. It is important to have good character. Achieving success in your life requires you to have a good and strong character.

Good character traits, such as honesty and integrity, are important elements in achieving success. You want to have good character traits to attract the people and/or “things” you need to achieve your success. Your character also plays an integral part in the true meaning of success.

How do you define success though?

Define your own success

Success is popularly represented in terms of having wealth, fame, and power. Also included, are tangible possessions such as large homes, luxury cars, and for some, ownership of jets and yachts.

However, as we are each very different individuals, how you define your own success will differ greatly from mine. Our personal goals to attain our success will vary, and so will our means of achieving them. There is no need to compare my life to yours or even that of a celebrity. The result will be a lose/lose situation.

Life would be a never-ending competition. You would live in a continuous state of fear and exhaustion. Why? There is absolutely no way to keep up with, nor do all the things that other people do (or are doing) to get to their level of success.

You would be exhausted in just trying to figure out what it is that they do each day. Pretty soon you may become fearful because you would be fighting a losing battle.

Do the things they have achieved align with your goals? How do you know if you will be happy or feel a sense of achievement if you acquire their level of success?

Your success is your own

Your success is your own. Society should not be used as your measurement. If that is the case, you will be in a perpetual state of unrest. Being in competition every day with others will result in your burnout.

I do not consider having power and money as goals for success – at least for me. I have many successes – daily. The true meaning of success for me is in the actions I take, in giving of myself and my resources, in helping someone else. It could be something as simple as listening to someone, who needed to vent so they could feel better.

Success should come from satisfying something that is inside you – not from outside.

What do you think? Is your success your own?
