Product Of Choices Or Circumstances

~I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.~Stephen R. Covey

You may have heard this quote. You may have also heard of the surrounding discussion. Some say that the statement is all wrong. Your decisions are based on learned experiences from your circumstances.

Therefore, you are indeed a product of your circumstances. Or are you?

Is it like the situation – which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Well, it is true that the circumstances of your life can, and do, have some impact on you. There is some correlation between your thoughts and your circumstances. Your thoughts, in turn, influence your behavior.

However, regardless of your circumstances, you can make a decision to change your thoughts.

Changing Your Circumstances?

You are not your circumstances. Whether they are negative or positive, your circumstances do not define you. You can remain in your situation, and be objective, at the same time.

You can be objective by treating yourself in the same way you would a good friend. Your self-talk, therefore, should be positive and encouraging words. Be careful you do not tell yourself anything that is negative. Do not sabotage your efforts to be objective.

Negative thoughts will and do, make appearances. Do not think they go away – ever. Quickly swipe away any negative thought as soon as it appears. You do so by changing to a positive thought. Have a mantra you can say if you find it difficult to switch your thoughts. Something inspirational, or a gratitude statement. Develop what works for you.

Your Decisions

The more objective you can be, separating yourself from what is taking place around you, the more clarity you will experience. In turn, your clarity will allow you to make better decisions.

The more detached you are from what you are experiencing, the more you will realize that your circumstances are really not you. You can make decisions based on a real clear perspective.

Your Outcome

You determine your outcome. Will you allow your circumstances to determine your outcome? Will you allow the decisions you make from your clear perspective, and not your circumstances, determine your outcome?

“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” Nido Qubein

You decide.
