Hiding in plain sight may seem like an odd phrase. Actually, it is an oxymoron. How can one be hiding yet be in plain sight?

It may sound contradictory – at least on the surface. Indeed I thought it a very strange phrase until the proverbial light bulb came on.

The full understanding came to me in a very simple but profound way. My glasses had been missing – or so I thought. I am positive that I am not the only one to have searched for missing glasses, only to discover that I was already wearing them!

The habit of wearing glasses has made me take them for granted. They have in effect blended into my life.

Blending into the surroundings

It is not only things but people that are blending into the surroundings. Blending in is not an uncommon thing. We did it as children to not stand out – to not be different – to not be bullied. Actually, for many, the blending continues into adulthood.

The need to belong, to be a member of the acceptable group stems from intrinsic motivation. This need to be socially accepted can lead to behavioral changes. Our mannerisms, the way we walk, talk, and act, are changed in order to blend into our environment.

This can be quite exhausting as we are each a unique individual. There are no two people that are alike. Yes, we can bond, and form groups based on our commonalities. However, we are not the same and so it will take a LOT of energy to behave other than your true self.

Hiding in plain sight

If your behavior is contrary to who you are, and you are suppressing your true self, you are hiding in plain sight.

Think about that for a moment.

Do you know who you are? What makes you – YOU?

The more you practice self-discovery, the less you will desire to belong as you determine your self-value. It is a difficult but well worthy journey.

You may lose some friends along the way but don’t be afraid – you will outgrow habits as well as people. It is inevitable with growth.

I found out a lot about myself when I stopped hiding and I am very sure that you will too. It was the best thing for me to discover that what others had labeled as shy behavior was actually the behavior of an extroverted introvert. The exploration of this discovery continues as I am quite fascinated!

Let’s talk

There is no one else in the world like you. Get to know and discover who you are and live your truth. Now doesn’t that sound liberating?

You are worth it.

Let’s talk!
