You Are Unique

You are a unique individual. Even if you are a child of multiple births, you are still a unique individual. You and your sibling(s) may look, maybe even act, in similar ways, but there is no other like you – you are not the same and, by the way, you should not be treated the same.

No two are the same

If you give it some thought, or just look around you a little closer than you would usually, you may see signs that no two of ANYthing is the same. Not to get too scientific, but in much the same way no two snowflakes are alike, the same goes for humans – no two are alike.

Snowflakes are all formed under similar conditions, and to the naked eye may appear to look alike. According to Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., “snowflakes take different shapes depending on the weather conditions. So, snowflakes falling at one place and time look similar to each other“. However, per Dr. Helmenstine, there is an infinite number of ways in which the many molecules that make up a snowflake can be arranged. Hence no two are the same. Each is unique.

Nurture or nature debate

Why do you think there is this ongoing dialog about “nurture or nature”? Curiosity and interest remain high as information is sought to determine human behavior – what influences are contributors.

However, just like a snowflake, you may come from the same environment, have the same parents, even have twin (or more) siblings, but you will still be unique.

You may have behaviors inherited from the genetics or traits of your parents. Or your behaviors are learned from the influences of your environment. We each learn in different ways.

Different learning styles myth

Research indicates there are many learning styles. The number of styles has also been the subject of great debate. There is the popularly known VARK, visual, auditory, read and write, and kinesthetic, said to be the four learning styles.

However, other research indicates there are seven learning styles: Visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social, and solitary.

Then, there is also research that indicates there are eight learning styles: Visual, linguistic, logical, auditory, interpersonal, intrapersonal, kinesthetic, and naturalistic.

But wait, there is still other research indicating there are as many as 71 different models of learning styles!

Your learning style

Whether you are aware of it or not, you have your own learning style. What do you know about your own personal learning style? Every person has their own choosing that is beneficial to them.

Have you struggled to learn within the confines of the structure of education in school? That is because there is not a smooth alignment between the schools’ learning structure and how we each learn. Why? We are all unique. No two are the same and that includes our learning styles.

Would you like, out of curiosity and just for fun, to see what is considered your learning style? I did it, out of curiosity, and to be honest, also because I wanted to see for myself how truthful I found the information. My results, in case you were wondering, were actually pretty close. I was duly impressed. Be sure to be as honest as you can when answering each question. But you knew that already right? Full disclosure, in order to get your results, you are asked for some personal information such as age, gender, name and email address.

Embrace your uniqueness

Even experts cannot quite determine the number of learning styles. Why is that? Is it because of each individual’s fluid style of learning based on the learning situation? Or is it really because no two are the same and so there may possibly be an unmeasurable number of styles?

There is no other like you. Embrace your uniqueness. It is your power. Think about your fingerprints for a moment – how unique are they? Think about what makes you – YOU!

Knowing your answer will help you to know yourself. Useful knowledge to know for example, how you stand out from another job candidate for any job interview. Knowledge also for self-realization, self-empowerment.

Your uniqueness is your greatest asset!
